Key Idea of the Software
The key idea of the software product “Reference and Information System ‘ABioGram’” is its integration with existing Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and/or Medical Information Systems (MIS). Direct interaction of medical personnel with the software interface is also possible. The result of the software operation is the automation of the categorization process for antimicrobial susceptibility testing results of the studied microorganism, with evaluation based on established breakpoint values from relevant guidelines.
The software uses the following information:
- Pathogen species
- Results of antimicrobial susceptibility testing for the given pathogen (with indication of the method)
- The type of document (guideline) used for susceptibility interpretation
Using the obtained information, the software performs categorization of results based on the criteria established in the relevant documents (EUCAST, CLSI, ECOFF) and outputs a reference and information message. This procedure is carried out by comparing the obtained susceptibility test values with breakpoint values. Breakpoints represent reference information provided in the relevant documents (EUCAST, CLSI, ECOFF).
The result of the software operation includes:
- a generated response for the studied microorganism–antibiotic combination, which is sent to the LIS, or presented to personnel in a graphical form (in the case of direct use of the web interface);
- analytical dashboards reflecting statistics of incoming requests (as data accumulates).
Existing laboratory information systems act as an information hub; however, at present they are not capable of providing a tool for automating the categorization of antimicrobial susceptibility testing results based on established breakpoints.
The proposed solution acts as a “brain center” for the automatic categorization of antimicrobial susceptibility results and contains a set of breakpoint values for susceptibility categorization (defined by the relevant documents: EUCAST, CLSI, ECOFF), followed by the generation of analytical dashboards reflecting antimicrobial resistance trends within an organization or region.
Functional Characteristics
The “Reference and Information System ‘ABioGram’” enables:
- automation of the process of categorizing antimicrobial susceptibility test results;
- automation of antimicrobial resistance surveillance within an organization or region;
- integration with existing LIS/MIS, or use of a web interface if such systems are not available;
- provision of reference and information support to automate routine tasks of microbiologists and clinical pharmacologists;
- compensation for the shortage of personnel with specialized skills in categorizing antimicrobial susceptibility results according to established breakpoints.
To perform these functions, the “Reference and Information System ‘ABioGram’”:
- Uses information on the pathogen species, antimicrobial susceptibility testing results for the given pathogen, and other available information.
- Performs categorization of results based on established criteria described in the relevant documents.
- Verifies the result using established rules described in the relevant documents.
- Generates a response that is sent to the LIS/MIS or displayed to the user.
- Stores the result for subsequent statistical analysis.
Brief Technical Description
The product is a software suite consisting of a database, an API for interaction with external systems, and a web interface. The administrator web interface is intended for configuring product operation and updating reference data. The user web interface is intended for viewing system results and entering data.
For end users, the software is delivered as a SaaS solution (no special installation actions are required on the end-user side), with various deployment scenarios depending on customer requirements:
- a virtual machine image with a prepared infrastructure for deployment on the customer’s server;
- a server-based solution;
- a cloud-based solution (internet portal).

Software Usage Scenarios
In Medical Organizations
The product is installed on a dedicated physical or virtual server and connected to the organization’s internal network. On the LIS side, integration with the API is configured to send requests and display responses. As a result, the organization is able to automate the process of categorizing obtained antimicrobial susceptibility values in accordance with breakpoint values defined in the relevant documents (EUCAST, CLSI, ECOFF).

Additionally, a web interface is provided that allows manual entry of antibiogram data from any user device and obtaining results without using LIS integration.
At the Level of a Regional Healthcare System / Multiple Institutions
The product is installed on a dedicated physical or virtual server within a regional center and connected to the Internet. In each LIS of institutions that wish to connect to the product, integration with the product and communication with the product installed in the regional center are configured. Installation of the product within the institution itself is not required.
With this model, all requests from institutions are processed centrally on a single server, which allows connecting any number of institutions to the product (limited only by the capacity of the server on which the product is installed).

With this interaction model, organizations are able to automate the process of categorizing obtained antimicrobial susceptibility values in accordance with breakpoint values defined in the relevant documents (EUCAST, CLSI, ECOFF), while the regional center gains the ability to analyze the entire spectrum of microbiological studies performed in real time and to monitor antimicrobial resistance at the regional level (viewing statistics of incoming requests).
