Federal reference dictionaries for antibiogram generation and health data exchange

Federal reference dictionaries for antibiogram generation and health data exchange

Why standardized dictionaries matter

When a microbiology result is generated and exchanged between a laboratory information system, a hospital information system, and external analytical platforms, consistent identifiers and values are essential.

Their practical role in structured exchange is explained in “SEMD 256 in microbiology”.

The federal dictionaries published through the Russian Ministry of Health NSI portal can be used to standardize the following components of an antibiogram:

  • microorganism identification;
  • coding of tested antimicrobial agents;
  • transmission of the method, standard, and additional test attributes;
  • interpretation of the antimicrobial susceptibility result;
  • registration of detected antimicrobial resistance markers.

Consistent coding reduces ambiguity and facilitates data exchange, retrospective reinterpretation, and subsequent antimicrobial resistance surveillance.

Practical integration recommendations

When designing a data exchange, it is advisable to:

  1. Transmit both the dictionary item code and its display name.
  2. Record the OID and version of the dictionary used.
  3. Preserve the original quantitative measurement together with the interpreted category.
  4. Map local codes explicitly rather than replacing them without a documented crosswalk.
  5. Review dictionary updates and schema changes before deploying a new version to a production system.
  6. Validate relationships across organism, agent, method, standard, result, and resistance marker fields.

This list is provided for reference. The mandatory fields and dictionaries depend on the applicable data-exchange profile, information-system requirements, and current regulatory documentation. Before implementation, verify the status, current version, and schema of each dictionary on the official Russian Ministry of Health NSI portal.
